2008 Jamsheed Silvan Syrah

Yarra Valley 13.8% Diam $45

I like what Messrs Lambert and Mills are doing in the Yarra Valley. I’ll refer to them together as I see similarities in packaging and wine styles.

Smoky, savoury wine with the whole bunch action very prominent on the palate & nose. Seems to add a bit of sappiness to the tannins and some stalk and twig components to the palate. There’s also a whole delicatessen of smoked meats in the bottle. Thoroughly enjoyable. The fruit is mostly in the darker spectrum with highlights of flagrantly red berries. But the success of its complexity lies in how it ties all these elements together (an idea that I was discussing with a companion just last Friday actually).

The wine invoked the sense of a menacing forest. In particular some of the darker moments of Sam Raimi’s “Evil Dead”. I won’t go into specifics but suffice to say the undergrowth seemed to both engulf and penetrate the ripe fruit at the same time. Even the excellent acidity is soon shrouded in dark savoury sweet currents of flavour. I’ll be buying more to see how it develops in the years to come.

Hey Jeremy have you tried the 08 Gruyere?

Yep, it's a really great wine too. This is my favourite of the Jamsheeds though. Have you got a personal preference Dave?

    Hey Jeremy,

just had the Jamsheed Westgate Riesling and blow me down if that wasn't one of the best I've had all year!

Only tried the Gruyere of the reds and it was, probably foolishly, drank at the end of a long night… I seem to remember a fair stalkiness to the wine but, well, not much else. :)

I'm really interested in that Westgate Rizza, but I'm yet to try it. Thanks for the reminder.

And you're not the first to crack a really good bottle at a time when you're not going to remember all the details. Not something you want do all the time but it's kinda fun now and again :)

I had the Jamsheed Great Western at my brother's wedding reception. Know it was good, but amongst so many fantastic wines all I can tell you about that one is it was a bit stalky too (in a good way);)

    cheers
