2012 Ross Hill Pinnacle Series Chardonnay

ross hill pinnacle chardonnayInteresting to see the enthusiasm this wine has whipped up since I first saw it. It impressed when I visited Orange but given that I only spent about five minutes with it before moving on to other wines in a large bracket, due diligence required another more leisurely look. There’s still much to like but it is on the lean side and the finish is a touch one-dimensional and acidic at the moment.

Struck match, spiced pears, grapefruit, hazelnuts and savoury oak with further complexity generated by wild ferment characters. That firm malic, green apple acidity imparts a sense of detail and purpose. Texture sits like a light cloth throw over furniture, leaving each individual element in slightly muted silhouette. Very chalky and dry. I suspect a gold medal rating will be warranted at some point in the future. 93+
