2012 Bird on a Wire Yarra Valley Syrah

image

If Bird on Wire wines aren’t on your radar may I take the opportunity to suggest that they should be. Caroline Mooney is making some of the most fearless and exciting wines to come out of the Yarra Valley.

This is very close to the standard of the 2011 release. It sees about 20% whole bunches but the fruit takes it in stride. It’s spicy, fragrant, earthen and lithe. Dark cherry and mulberry with streaks of red fruit and a smoky charcuterie character. Some herbal notes – more obvious at certain times. It morphs a great deal in the glass and over a few days tasting but is never anything other than fascinating and satisfying. Layered tannins, backlit acidity. I cannot see how it won’t continue to improve. 93+
