2012 Oakridge 864 Guerin Block 4 Pinot Noir

oakridge 864 pinot 2012Oakridge produced some of the better Pinots from the Yarra Valley in 2011. With kinder conditions in 2012, winemaker David Bicknell has come up with his best take on the variety yet. The Guerin Vineyard lies in the Upper Yarra. That increasingly desirable area known as Gladysdale to be precise. Fruit was destemmed and underwent 100% whole berry fermentation without plunging or pump overs. Maturation took place over nine months in a mixture of barriques, hogsheads and puncheons of which 15% were new.

Has it all. Balance, elegance, complexity and an immaculate line. What takes it to the next level though is its breathtaking architecture and emphatic persistence. Only medium-bodied at most. It smells and tastes of red and dark cherries, plums, pastrami and crushed spice. Bursts with pomegranate seeds on the palate. Sensitive use of oak enhances texture and structure. Agile and swift with super-fine acidity delivering the flavours precisely while granite and quartz-like minerality underpin the deep yet punchy fruit. The softest set of tightly knit tannins see it out. On day three it’s really singing and still fresh as a daisy. Give it time. 95 Excellent – Exceptional
