I was going to review this tomorrow morning, safe in the knowledge that I’d still have the scoop. I tweeted about it instead. Then I checked in on The Wine Front and bloody Campbell Mattinson had already reviewed it. I haven’t read his note but I’ll admit I saw the score.
Anyway, the Hoddles Creek 1er Chardonnay comes from a higher easterly facing block of the vineyard with poorer soil. It’s always produced a superior wine to the superb Estate Chardonnay.
Intensity, focus, texture and extension mark it as a truly special wine. Grapefruit, honeysuckle and apple with a little nougat, almond meal and a mere hint of sour lime. It’s layered but a decidedly mineral spine maintains its form, driving through the palate with penetration and emphatic, spicy length. Should cellar brilliantly. 95+ Excellent – Exceptional
