For those who are unaware, The Cadenzia project was designed to promote the Grenache based blends of McLaren Vale. You can read about it at d’Arenberg’s website here if you’re interested. I’ll refrain from regurgitating.
Firstly, let’s get to the Elephant in the room. I’m not a big fan of American oak in general and I find obvious evidence of it in GSMs rather odious. Unfortunately for me, the vanilla and coffee custard is strong here. Still, maybe I’m in the minority. It’s not really a fault, I just don’t like the added sweetness nor the flavours imparted.
Tannins are noticeably strong and grainy too, as seems to be the D’Arenberg style with Grenache/Grenache based wines. The nose offers coal and deep red fruits alongside the sweeter oak. It’s plummy and jubey in the mouth and the palate is quite bucolic. Cherry high tones and toasted spice. Hints of florals provide a counterpoint. You could (maybe) rate it higher if you like the oak treatment. Good
