2008 d’Arenberg The Ironstone Pressings Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre

Stepping up to the tier below the single vineyard offerings and we’re beginning to hit real quality and excitement here. It’s a blend of 55% Grenache, 38% Shiraz and 7% Mourvèdre. The name comes from the decomposed laterite granite known as ironstone which is riddled through some of McLaren Vale’s more historic vineyards.

It smells and tastes of blackberry jubes with earthy undertones, ground brown spice, tar, licorice root and chocolate covered coffee beans. Integrated acidity with a gentle, textural entry but what follows lifts it above the pack. Some of the most fine-grained, sensuous tannins I’ve seen in a GSM. Still tightly knit at four years of age with great shape. Flows from go to whoa. Seriously good gear. Very Good – Excellent
