2010 Yabby Lake Single Vineyard Pinot Noir

I‘m far more familiar with Yabby Lake’s Chardonnays than I am with their Pinots. On the basis of this wine I’d best change that. It opens sombrely and with a stony heart. Licorice root, undergrowth and minerals are more evident than dark cherry/berry fruit to begin with.

Given some air though, it starts to talk. Fleeting strawberry and blueberry highlights join floral notes (violets mixed with roses) but the wine is still brooding and dense. Super silky up front but with the sort of firm but fine tannin I hope to see more of in Australian Pinot. Utterly serious, superior architecture suggests this will age terrifically. Clove and cinnamon spice fill out the picture.

Great texture, remarkable length, a hint of intriguing saline minerality, superb structure and real intensity mark this wine. Masculine and savoury; this is my sort of Pinot. Excellent – Exceptional

  1. Chris Hooley says:

Definitely a stellar Pinot! Bursting with maturity it has a hit of dark cherries and cinnamon. Getting a hint of satsumas as well through my second glass…..

  2. There’s certainly some darker elements in there, fruit and otherwise. Happy to hear this is being enjoyed.
