2010 Yering Station Village Chardonnay

I haven’t tasted a Yering Station Chardonnay since Tom Carson vacated his winemaking position to move to Yabby Lake, so these new wines are quite a surprise. Gone is the lean, minimally oaked style that had characterised the wines in the past. In its place? Something far more opulent – brazen even. The entry level 2010 ‘Little Yering’ Chardonnay is too hot, syrupy, bitter and oaky for my liking but this ‘Village’ wine isn’t too bad.

Grilled peach flesh with some citrus undercutting it. Plenty of toasty, nutty oak but there is enough powerful fruit to sop it all up. Bread and candied ginger fill out the picture. It’s certainly ripe and full of flavour…not a whole lot of finesse mind you but it gets the job done. Good
