2009 Pyren Vineyard Broken Quartz Shiraz

Pyrenees 13.9% Screwcap $20

The sad truth is that most of the wines tasted for review on this site are tasted alone. Leftover bottles eventually make their way to neighbours and friends but I don’t know enough wine geeks who are willing to put up with the faces I pull when the actual work is being done. One thing is certain though. You know it’s a good wine if a smile comes across your face. And that’s precisely what happened here.

I’ll get to the aromas and flavours but the 2009 Pyren Vineyard Broken Quartz Shiraz is all about composure, balance, flow and that elusive notion – drinkability. Medium bodied and refreshing, it’s unassuming in the best of ways; a sense of modesty that comes from being totally at ease with one’s self.

Plums and blackberry, pepper and assorted brown spice, mint, coffee and aniseed. Some dark chocolate and a mere kiss of charcoal oak on the finish reinforce its charms and an admirable tweak of tannic grip makes sure the deal is sealed. At the twenty dollar mark it’s a stand out. I wish there were more like it.

As ever, top note. I like the little personal insight too.

    Sounds extraordinaryily good value.

I see you've tweeked the layout of your site too – confused simpletons like me.

Thanks Stu. It's an extremely smart wine and well worth seeking out.

A couple of layout tweaks to tide me over until I move to a new platform…hopefully sometime in August/September.

    cheers,
