2009 Belgravia Roussanne

Orange 12.9% Screwcap $22

I always get a little excited when an Australian Roussanne turns up in the mail. It’s such an exotic grape, so esoteric…or maybe I’m just very strange.

Plenty of appeal to be found here, although I can’t help but feel that the variety is still suited to a warmer climate and a more generous expression. Assorted stonefruit, melon, orange citrus, creamed honey and nuts with a herbal edge. A bit of viscous textural action on a fairly blurry palate – no great definition but that sort of suits the style.

There’s still a firm line of acid running through it. Finishes quite steely, if a little short, with ginger spice and an attractive nuance of bitter herbal tea. Not at all blousy – in fact, I wouldn’t mind if it was a bit fatter. Fascinating wine though and, if you’re a bit strange like me, worth the detour.
