2010 Tar & Roses Tempranillo

Alpine Valleys, Heathcote 14.5% Screwcap $24

My interest in Australian Tempranillo really began with Don Lewis and Narelle King’s 2007 interpretation under the Tar & Roses label. At the time I went out on a limb and called it a landmark release (and I wasn’t the only one). Since then it seems like interest in the variety has boomed in this country…although I have no figures to support that. At the very least, there are now a number of producers making good examples all over the continent. This one’s a multi-regional blend from the Alpine Valleys and Heathcote.

Raspberry lollies, vanilla cola, spice and black cherry with some tarry notes. The acidity was a touch brisk on the first day but it sorted itself out pretty quickly. There’s a fair amount of savoury, rustic charm and a sour twist too. Perhaps a little warmth on the finish but overall I’d say it handles its alcohol well.

It’s still an excellent way to introduce yourself to the grape, especially as it is widely available for less than twenty bucks.
