2008 De Bortoli Estate Grown Chardonnay

Yarra Valley 12.5% Screwcap $28

Judging from the winery’s website, we’ll be moving onto the 2010 Estate Grown Chardonnay soon but as the 2008 is still readily available on retail shelves I thought it worthwhile to post a quick note. Lowish ABV, older French oak, wild ferment, lees stirred…these are a few of my favourite things; and the wine is drinking very well at the moment.

It smells and tastes of white peach, honeydew melon and grapefruit with just a lick of creamy cashew oak. Some toast and spice at the end. It’s not a show off but the balance, texture and length are highly commendable. A seemingly effortless wine.

There’s no rush in terms of a drinking window but I’d suggest that it’s already in the groove. It is, indeed, a good time to be a Chardonnay drinker in Australia.
