2006 Jansz Tasmania Vintage Cuvée

Tasmania, Pipers Brook 12.0% Cork $40

I believe this is the same wine that used to go under the name “Premium Vintage Cuvée”. I guess Tasmania is gaining some real cultural capital when it comes to sparkling wine, thus the change in title. It spends four years on lees and is made up of 51% Chardonnay and 49 % Pinot Noir.

This release sees the usually buxom blonde in markedly less curvaceous form, with white stone fruit firmly in the background behind lemon, sea spray, florals, hazelnuts and freshly baked bread. The mouth feel is seductive, the line is breathtaking and a dry finish of minerals, lemon and brine is exhaustive. Tiny red berries and strawberries attest to Pinot’s positive influence on the wine.

It still swells slightly on the mid palate but the balance is faultless. For mine, this is the best Jansz Vintage Cuvée to date. Increased restraint has worked wonders. Gorgeous stuff. Drink by the sea.
