2006 Clover Hill Brut

Tasmania, Pipers Brook 13.0% Diam $46.99

Opened a number of Australian Sparklings together last week, so I thought I might get a couple of notes up before the Easter long weekend. I’ve long been a fan of Clover Hill, especially their Blanc de Blancs. Actually their Rosé can be pretty sharp too. But to the wine in question.

Made up of 57% Chardonnay 36% Pinot Noir and 7% Pinot Meunier, it’s quite brassy, fruity and bold…in a good way. Apples and cinnamon with cherries, strawberries, egg washed pastry and brioche. Dosage is well judged to produce a dry finish without masking some sweet cherry berry flavour. I was quite surprised by the prominence of the Pinot element.

It’s a touch foamy in the mouth but that doesn’t hinder the wine too much. The honeyed spice finish works a treat. A well executed, forward style that doesn’t go over the top but is generous in what it has to offer.
