2010 Flaxman Dessert Semillon

Eden Valley 11% Screwcap $20

Flaxman’s Dessert Semillon is made using a fair percentage of cordon cut fruit – grapes dried on the vine to increase their intensity (and I suspect, to enhance complexity). 80g/l rs…but the fresh Semillon grapes impart a sense of vitality.

Ripe pear, custard apple and a little marmalade with lemons increasingly working their way into the equation as the wine weaves through its slightly disjointed line.

The methods used in production create a unique dessert wine that combines some density and drive with more refreshing elements. It didn’t seem to entirely come together on the night and I probably preferred the 2009 release. Still, it’s an interesting wine with an attractive flavour profile. Another bottle on another night may well possess the cohesion that I thought was lacking (only just) this time round.
