2010 Scarborough Late Harvest Semillon

Hunter Valley 9.5% Screwcap $20

Bread and Butter pudding is always a good excuse to pull out a couple of dessert wines. I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again – I drink more late harvest styles than I do botrytised ones (although, if Sauternes were cheaper that may not be the case) . Admittedly they almost never have the same complexity and they are rarely show stoppers, but I find myself enjoying the manner in which they provide a lighter conclusion to a meal.

This effort from Scarborough hits the mark nicely. It has plenty of sweet tropical notes and some honey drizzled figs but a cleansing line of citrus and acid is threaded through it, providing a pleasant juxtaposition which just seems to work for me. It’s an uncomplicated and simple sort of pleasure but none the worse for it.

I’m looking for balance over intensity in these sort of wines and that’s just what this delivered.
