2009 Mayer Bloody Hill Chardonnay

Yarra Valley 12.5% Diam $35

I can’t for the life of me decide which is my favourite Australian region for Chardonnay but it’s in Victoria, that’s for sure. Sorry Margaret River, you’re a little too bold to truly win my heart. I prefer subtle flirtation to confident forwardness. Love’s a game you know…

Lees ahead of oak in this little beauty from Timo Mayer and boy does it work a treat. Grapefruit is dominant with lemon curd, mandarin and peach creeping in as the wine opens up. Hints of toast and spice on conclusion. Not so much about the flavours as the flow really. This baby just rolls with an impeccable line and the endurance of a Kenyan long distance runner.

Truly refined, it glances at you a few times before grabbing your eye…and then you just succumb. This relationship is going to last at least another five or so years and it’s only going to get more exciting as it builds.
