2009 Mitchell Harris Cabernet Sauvignon

Pyrenees 13.5% Screwcap $24.95

For those out there complaining about a loss of elegance and too much alcohol in Cabernet Sauvignon from recent Coonawarra (may she live forever) vintages, I have this to say to you - go and try some Cabernet from the Yarra Valley and the Pyrenees. No, it won’t taste the same but there is still good Wynns and Majella etc for you to get your Coonawarra flavour hit. If it is finesse and lower ABVs that you’re after, consider some of the other regions producing excellent Cabernet within this very big continent.

This wine is a fantastic example of what I’m getting at. Gorgeously vital and unencumbered by heavy oak influences, it is bright with balanced acidity which leads into fine but firm tannin. A harmonious and intricate tapestry of aromas and flavours. It’s all so unforced and dignified.

Fresh but concentrated blackberries, eucalypt and bay leaf, tomacco, char and a hint of bonox. Stony, graphite like minerality heralds a completely satisfying conclusion. It’s a medium bodied beauty, dry and savoury. I consumed (and I do mean consumed…not a drop was left) this over three days and it just kept getting better. I’d love to see it in ten years.
