2010 De Bortoli Yarra Valley Estate Grown Pinot Noir Rosé

Yarra Valley 13.0% Screwcap $25 Source: Sample

I lined up the complete range of De Bortoli’s new release Rosés on the weekend to get a bit of comparative tasting action going. Pale, dry and textural is the catch cry and they’ve pretty much nailed that brief with every wine. Having said that, each label is very distinctive.

I took them all over to a friend’s flat afterwards for dinner. She’s not a wine tragic like me but she immediately remarked on the differences. I’ll be rolling out the notes on all these wines over the course of this week, so strap yourself in for a fair bit of Rosé action. For those that aren’t into the ‘pink’, I’ll intersperse other wines for variety.

The Estate Grown Yarra Valley Pinot Noir Rosé is the crispest and subtlest wine of the bunch. A shy and restrained nose of strawberry, cherry and pomegranate. The palate is light and tight but builds in intensity through its line, finishing with brown spice and a touch of pepper. There’s a tweak of tannin as well. You’d wouldn’t pick it as being made from any grape other than Pinot. The emphasis is on elegance and finesse rather than overt complexity. The back palate persistence is excellent – there’s real length here. An extremely impressive and enjoyable wine. I don’t think you could have too much of this lying around for summer. It’s delicious, understated and refreshing.
