Yarra Valley 13% Screwcap $18 Source: Sample
I first read about this wine on Jesse Lewis’ site, Good Drop. I must admit I was instantly intrigued and very keen to taste it. It certainly didn’t disappoint, and I can’t say my note differs much from Jesse’s.
The word ‘dry’ in the title is certainly warranted. There’s only 2.1g/l rs. Texture, though, is the focal point of the wine. 70% barrel fermented, 100% malo and a little bit of Pinot Gris…and this wine exemplifies the idea that a little bit of Pinot Gris goes a long way. It adds an extra aromatic dimension reminiscent of pink musk sticks, flavour in the form of pear and spice as well as a genial amount of glycerol-like viscosity.
It’s a very soft, gentle wine on the palate but there is still good definition. Strawberry and citrus notes are clearly delineated yet a sense of cohesiveness is somehow achieved. The pear morphs towards crisper apple on the finish which, once again, is not lacking in any way.
Exciting winemaking resulting in a Rosé of great individuality, interest and quality.
