2009 Torzi Matthews Schist Rock Shiraz

Eden Valley 14.5% Diam $17 Source: Retail

I’m a big fan of Eden Valley Shiraz and this offering from the Torzi Matthews stable offers abundant regional pleasure at a fantastic price. It’s pretty and floral with excellent depth of fruit flavour. Not so much about structure but the acidity and fine tannin is far more than perfunctory. It was made using 25% whole bunches but that doesn’t seem to present itself in any obvious manner. Perhaps it aids the aromatics?

Sweet blackberry and boysenberry, lavender and a fair shake of black pepper along with a hint of bitter coffee and plenty of  cocoa powder. Good shape and thrust, not to mention a stony minerality that only makes its presence fully known on the back palate.

It’s ready to go now but you could cellar it with confidence over the mid-term.
