Marlborough 13.0% Cork $22 Source: Sample
A couple of sparklers from New Zealand next, neither of which contain either Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. This one is 100% Sauvignon Blanc and you’ll have to be a 100% fan of Marlborough Savvy to get into it. It’s got the same characteristics but on steroids. Seven months on lees hasn’t tamed the vibrancy of the fruit in any way.
Straight from the bottle, it’s summer and someone has just mowed the very green lawn outside. Super pungent nose of passionfruit, gooseberry, green apples and herbs with a fair amount of nettles and a heap of freshly cut grass. Kind of crass but very regional. Some white bread adds appeal.
The dosage isn’t too badly judged (10g/l rs, 8g/l TA). It’s fairly short but I don’t think its trying to be a ‘fine’ wine. Playful with citrus and pith on the finish. The acidity isn’t harsh, bead is quite fine but the price seems a little aspirational. I’m sure this will appeal to some. I feel guilty saying this, but it was kind of fun to drink…although sadly, after a glass and a half, the novelty had worn off for me. A wine for lovers of this particular flavour spectrum or perhaps just those times you’re feeling a touch vulgar. In short, it didn’t go a long way towards convincing me that the grape is suited to sparkling techniques.
