Waipara Hills Southern Cuvée

Marlborough 12% Cork $22 Source: Sample

So after the the Waipara Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc experience I opened this with some trepidation, but I can honestly say I enjoyed it (as did a friend with whom I shared it). 100% Riesling, 7 months on lees, 19g/l rs, 6.55g/l TA….so it’s basically off-dry sparkling Riesling.

Florals, green apples, sherbet, apple cider, candied lemon rind, puff pastry and spice. Dosage is on the higher side and certainly adds sweetness but it works with accentuated fruit flavours and acidity. Good length too. The mid-palate has a little mixed melon.

Aperitif or spicy food style wine. We had it with a Mexican dish of corn tostadas, frijoles, cheese, diced green apple & vegetable salad, black olives and sour cream. It worked a treat and I’d be happy to do it all again.
