2009 Jamsheed Harem Series La Syrah

Yarra Valley, Grampians 13.5% Screwcap $17 Source: Sample

I think of the Harem Series as an entry level to the Jamsheed wines, and this one provides a more than tidy idea of what the winery offers at higher price points. It’s very good value and has loads of character – but I would still urge you to move on up to the new Grampians releases at some point if you can. It’s simply worth it.

A blend of 60% Yarra Syrah, the rest being Great Western fruit. There’s certainly some real affinity between the regions on display. Brambly red and black berries, some charcouterie (presumably from the 60% whole bunches used), black pepper, cinnamon quills and dark chocolate. It’s bright and medium bodied, fairly juicy and has some admirable stemmy/stalky tannins.

Enjoyable and easy to drink with quite a few points of difference to most sub $20 wines. It would be a treat to have a fair few of these around the flat for everyday consumption.
