2008 Chapel Hill Bush Vine Grenache

McLaren Vale 15.0% Screwcap $30 Source: Sample

Tasty take on McLaren Vale Grenache here, at its best on days two and three when the oak integrated. Sourced mostly from 82 year old vines, with a bit of 49 year old material included too. Pretty much everything a good Vale Grenache should be. Earthy, deeply fruited, spicy and a bit silky. Nice acid, but there’s a fair amount of textured, grainy tannin here too. Works a treat.

The predominant red currants were joined by mocha initially, but dark chocolate added a more complex, savoury and pleasantly bitter layer with time, leaving the coffee in the background. Dusty, sanguine finish with assorted dried herbs lingering. No confectionery anywhere in sight.

This is lovely stuff and will cellar well too. Long live Grenache.
