2008 Teusner The Dog Strangler Mataro

Barossa 14.5% Screwcap $23.75 Source: Retail

I was really excited to come across this at Dan Murphy’s. Why? Well, it’s still considered an “alternative” variety & I believe such grapes are an important part of the future of Australian wine. I don’t care much for the duopoly but in this case, it may further an increasingly informed and curious wine buying public’s exploration of the diversity that the vinous world offers.

I adored the 2006 Teusner Astral Series Moppa Mataro but sadly I have none of that left. It’s one for the cellar anyway, The Dog Strangler can pretty much be fully enjoyed now. It’s mouth flooding and rich without feeling too heavy. Ferrous & earthen, with dark plum over flickers of spiced red currants. Some intriguing latte notes accompany rock salt and liquorice.

The finish is all tar and dark fruit, with iron file tannins pulling things together beautifully. Someone recently suggested Mataro may be the new black, and on the back of this release it’s not hard to see why.

The 2009 is now out. Second hand reviews suggest is as good or better than 2008. I've got some on the way and will update when I can try it.

I've had an 09 (no notes), look forward to reading your thoughts. I thought it went one better than the 08 but I'm always interested in another opinion.

    cheers
