2007 Yarraloch Chardonnay

Yarra Valley 12.5% Screwcap $35 Source: Retail

Proof positive that low alcohol Chardonnay need not be under done and lacking in taste.

“2007 was a hot dry year resulting in the earliest harvest on record at our Whittlesea vineyard. Given the warm year the fruit was picked at lower Beaume than in previous years to maximise natural acid and elegance in the final wine.”

“Elegance”, not neutrality. This one is coming along very nicely. Honeysuckle, grapefruit, preserved lemon with hints of toasty oak & oatmeal on the nose, but it’s the palate where this wine works its magic. Leesy and savoury with lots of toasted sourdough over lemon & grapefruit. Some bitter almond skin on the finish, which is smoky and has a little white grape tannin. Long and totally captivating in its individuality.

The wine possesses weightless intensity through the entire palate and it just doesn’t stop.  It may be a touch bitter and smoky for some, but certainly not for me. An adults only Chardonnay with minerals included.
