2008 Neagles Rock Shiraz

Clare Valley 14.5% Screwcap $25 Source: Sample

Fermented on skins for nine days.  Eighteen months of American & French oak.

Regional menthol over sweet, ripe blackberry, redcurrants and vanilla. Red and black liquorice (yes, I do mean both. Red is sweeter). The menthol is very dominant on nose, submerging the other aromas a bit. Sweet plush entry of soft rich black and red curranty fruit. Liquorice and mocha on back of mid palate before a vanilla mint lift pushes through loose knit tannins at the very end.

It’s a reasonable wine from a difficult vintage but it finishes in a hard and unpleasant way.  It declined on the second day, losing the generous sweet fruit intensity and becoming a little vegetal.
