2008 RK Shiraz

Beechworth 13.9% Screwcap $45 Source-Retail

Many will already know the drill on this wine.  It was made by Rick Kinzbrunner of Giaconda exclusively for Vintage Cellars.  Jeni Port has written about the whole deal.  I grabbed the last bottle from my local as I’d missed out on the RK Chardonnay and Rick doesn’t send me many samples just yet…

I believe it’s estate fruit, made in the style of a Cornas.  A couple of plates of charcuterie and some bacon fat frying in the pan but there’s some lovely dark fruit here as well. Just look under the smoke. And there’s a bit of “cherry on top” too.  Tree roots, plums, a choc-vanilla character and some luverly spice. Some rusticity on the nose, but I don’t think it’s brett and if it is I like it, so it doesn’t matter much to me.  Slightly sappy tannins and more than fair drive through the whole palate.  Some have said it falls away on the finish, but I didn’t think so myself.

It’s all jolly enjoyable if you ask me, and at a decent price.
