Sorry about the lack of info on price and ABV, but I got this for a steal and it’s a cleanskin, so those are my excuses.
Kilikanoon acquired Seppeltsfield from Fosters in 2007 and quite frankly, this piece of vinous gold is in far better hands now. Australia has an amazing history of excellent fortified wines & the Seppeltsfield winery is one of the jewels in its crown. I’m a firm believer in getting the public to give our fortifieds more time and thought. Hopefully that will lead to a greater appreciation of them (and these wines are ridiculously cheap for their quality) and a furtherance of the grand tradition.
This is still very young and fresh for a near 12 year old wine. It is not that sweet. I served it to a friend who was expecting raisins, sugar and prominent alcohol. She was quite pleasantly surprised. On the nose there are nuts, cherries, raisins, raspberries, orange rind, lacquer, dark chocolate, and a touch of sweet spice. Really, really complex and it plays out that way on an exceptionally smooth palate with superb textural qualities. The harmony of the flavours is a real wonder and the nutty finish goes on and on.
A ripper of a wine with many years left ahead.
