2008 Barossa Valley Shiraz Mataro

Barossa 14.5% Screwcap $11.99

Purple black as you’d expect, the red fruits were prominent early on with darker complexity coming to the fore over time. A wine that certainly improved & gained depth as it opened up. Never a bad sign as far as I’m concerned.

There is a blend of fresh and stewed fruits at play. Cherries, raspberry coulis and stewed plum. Plush mouthfeel and sweet fruited in a generous Barossan manner. Reminded me of a guitar with some heavy reverb applied actually. But the definition is still there.

The spice kicks in nicely after the that sweet fruit entry, and brazil nuts, aniseed/red liquorice, vanilla plus a little freshly turned earth make sure it’s no one trick pony. The tannins are fine and dusty, the finish good. The Mataro seems to be adding quite a lot in terms of personality and is a very worthwhile addition. Did I mention that this is only $11.99? Lots of bang for your buck.
