2013 Mayer Close Planted Pinot Noir

image“P.Funk, uncut funk, the bomb”-Parliament

The funk is not doobified here. There is no David Bowie to be seen…although someone did spot Old Gregg in the lake nearby.

Wilted roses, lilacs and smoke. Brown leaves and rocks. 50% whole bunches this year and they mesh well with slightly fuller fruit. Sweet before sour cherries alongside plums, cinnamon and mace. Persistence, nimble acidity and layered tannin. Given air it’s silky upfront and sappy/stalky from the back of the mid-palate on. It goes out on a complexing note of bitter nut skins, earth and herbs. This is the real deal. 95

Do you have the Doktor? Or indeed the Bloody hill?

  2. Yes, I’ve got the 2013 Bloody Hill and the 2012 Doktor Riesling . I believe the 2013 Doktor Pinot will be released later this year.

    • Michael Charles says:

I’ve just bought it Jeremy! It’s available.

Interested in your review on the Riesling, which I didn’t buy in my lot of 12.

I might get a couple later if you like it.

      • I reckon I underrated the 2011 Doktor Riesling Michael. Sunk a few bottles after the fact and really enjoyed them. Down with the flu at the moment so will be heading back to late February notes for now but very keen to taste the 2012 release. I’ll certainly get to the 2013 Doktor Pinot if there’s any around in a month.

I believe the Doktor Pinot is out now (well, it’s on the price list). I was one of the few that preferred the Doktor ’12 over the CP, so am excited to try. Cheers for the review Jeremy. Now, where’s that credit card…?

  4. Thanks Simon. My freeze on wine purchases is still in place for another three weeks. Hoping some of the CP & Doktor are still available at that point…

Thought this was a little ho-hum. All the bits are there, but it just didn’t move me last night. I don’t disagree with your descriptors, not at all, but I’d say about 92 for me (have some more to try tonight, so let’s see what happens). A bit too silky and even verging on a little sweet for me. UIt has a Yarra Valley Pinot flavour profile that I just don’t really like – and nothing at all to do with being a bit more whole-bunchy than the 2010 and 1012 (though I’d not call it whole bunchy at all really). Yet we demolished the 2013 Doktor. Around 94-95, or straight 95. A mighty Australian Pinot rather than just a Yarra Valley one. MV6 to the rescue once again! I really suggest you get hold of one.

Wife criticized me for buying 4 of the Close Planted and only 1 of the Doktor. Now she says we’ve got 3 wines to cellar that we don’t really love!! It’s a tough life. In the words of that old knight in The Last Crusade, I chose … poorly.

  6. I’ll have to attempt to get a hold of some of the Doktor and the Big Betty to take a look. I’m happy to have a couple of bottles of this in the cellar but I’m even more pleased that I stocked up on the 2012 release.

    • Michael Charles says:

Prefer Big Betty to this, even though I don’t much like Yarra Valley Shiraz. Have to give credit where credit’s due.
