2013 Golden Grove Vermentino

golden grove vermentinoGood to see an Australian Vermentino that engages with body and texture at a meaningful level. Ultimately I think it falls a little short of the mark in terms of execution but the intent bodes well.

The lees, wild ferment and barrel work add a creaminess yet the florals are preserved. Ripe tropical fruit flavour with an extra bit of sweetness via American oak. Pear, melon, lemon curd and almond skins. A little briney on the finish. Noticeable tannin. Winemaker Ray Costanzo reckons he’s pushed the oak about as far as he’d like to with this vintage and after having spent a day with it I wouldn’t mind seeing less in the wine. Still, I can’t help but feel that he’s on the right track. 88
