2013 Sons of Eden Freya Riesling

sons of eden rizzaIt will be interesting to look at these 2013 classic dry Clare and Eden Valley Rieslings next to their 2012 counterparts in ten years time. If I were a betting man I might have a flutter on the former showing the best. It’s crystal ball gazing though.

Intense citrus blossom aromatics, lime, lemon, sour apple and flint. Maybe a suggestion of quality tonic water on the back-palate. Not so much about complexity of flavour. Just purity, focus, length and fruit intensity. A short note but a resoundingly successful take on the style. 93+

Hi Jeremy- I think I agree re 2013 v 2012 Rieslings. I’ve tasted a fair few now from both vintages. For me (and I’m no expert) not only do the 2013s seem to have a superior quality of fruit but the acid shape and line is there to back it up, making them great prospects for ageing. Some might argue that its splitting hairs- but to me that’s the general impression…

Possibly, but I’m pretty sure that 2012 investors won’t be disappointed, particularly if their investment has been in the Eden Valley versions.

  3. Yes, I certainly can’t see anyone “losing” out of the two vintages.

  4. Matt says:

Yes, agree. Both great vintages producing excellent wines. I was lucky enough to have a conversation with Neil Pike a few weeks ago on the matter. He thinks 2012 was the better vintage, but tasting the 13 Merle on a pre release- it blew me away (more so than the 12 which was great). Again, I’m no expert and certainly not in the league of NP, but I know what I’ll be putting under my house…

  5. Tom Barry seemed to be of the opinion that 2012 was a better Clare Valley vintage but that the best producers would stand apart from the others with their 2013′s. It’s all a fun discussion in my opinion because let’s face it – we’ve all had some stand out Clare and Eden Rieslings from both years. Probably the main reason I’d bet on 2013 in ten years (even more so than the reasons Matt has mentioned and that I see in the wines as well) is that I’d likely be offered better odds :) Not that I’m a betting man…

So not likely to see you in the high rollers room at Sky City any time soon then Jeremy..? ;)

  7. No, although despite my better judgement I do lash out on a couple of two dollar instant scratch-its every year…
