2012 Yalumba Eden Valley Roussanne

yalumba roussanneApparently Yalumba’s first attempt to produce a straight varietal Roussanne was in 1980′s but the imported vine material was discovered to be carrying a virus and had to be destroyed. It took until 2000′s to get the vines into the ground. This inaugural release is wild fermented in old barrels and receives battonage.

It’s aromas and flavours are esoteric as befits the grape in question. White stonefruits, apples, green tea, mild florals and spicy gingerbread all play a role. Waxy/creamy textural traits with good presence and form. A solid line of acidity keeps everything on track. It really is rather savoury despite a seam of honey working its way through the palate. Good reach too. I suspect it will look even better in a year’s time but if you’re drinking it now then give it some air and don’t serve it too chilled. Exciting times ahead for both Yalumba and Roussanne. 92
