2012 Howard Park Great Southern Chardonnay

howad park gs chardThe 2011 Howard Park Chardonnay was a trophy level wine. Vintage conditions haven’t allowed the same level of achievement with this year’s release however it is still rewarding. Just a little less structured and focused is all.

Sees 30% new French oak and regular battonage during the latter stages of fermentation. “We taste the Chardonnay regularly and if it goes through malo then so be it,” remarks McDonald. It has a mealy texture with grapefruit accented acidity centring the spiced pear, almonds and hints of buttered toast. Generosity of primary fruit on entry while the finish is savoury and slightly smoky courtesy of the Burgundian barrels used. Quite ready to be enjoyed now. 92
