2012 Drake Samson Yarra Valley Pinot Noir

drake samsonA collaboration between Aria sommelier Matt Dunne and Mac Forbes. I can’t tell you anything about either of their roles. Indeed I’ve only met Mac once when I uttered the momentous words “Hi Mac” and he smiled back and returned the greeting, blissfully unaware of who I was. I’m no man of great renown but I am increasingly pleased when my anonymity remains intact. I harbour no ambitions of public stardom within the wine world. If I can pay my bills and keep doing what I do then that’ll be fine by me. Mind you, were someone to throw a large wad of cash at me…

Two vineyards were utilised for this release; one in Seville the other in the Coldstream area of the Yarra Valley. A bit of French oak and some whole bunch work. Amongst the dominant cherry fruit it has some bitter Campari and orange peel action going on. Roots and forest litter as well. Lovely aromatics and texture. All cured meats and flowers with a soft slinkiness in the mouth. Inviting acidity carries the structural workload. Of a savoury persuasion with a cerebral bent although it drinks easily enough without any thought whatsoever. 92
