2013 Churinga Vineyard Watervale Riesling by KT

kt churinga riesling ktKerri ‘KT’ Thompson’s Clare Valley Rieslings are the ones I hang out for the most each year. I’m not saying they are necessarily the best Rieslings Australia produces but they are up there and I personally love what they offer. The Churinga vineyard was first planted to Grenache in 1930 but the Riesling vines came in 1954.

Citrus is joined by subtle notes of guava, green apple and stone fruit. It’s classically styled. More restraint, greater intensity and some of that pulverised rock minerality that kind of reminds me of good Muscadet. Exceptional length and focus. Once again, the acidity is ultra-fine. A touch of melon rind on the back-palate. As good as it is now it should be a revelation in time 95+

Have been too busy to order these. Thanks for the reminder. Are you doing the others? If so, I’ll wait until you do before ordering. I aim to order a mixed 12.

  2. I just buy these at retail Michael so it’s unlikely that I’ll have a chance to look at the 2013 Melva or Peglidis Rieslings in the near future, although I’ll shout out if that changes. I’ve actually never tried a KT red – quite an oversight on my part really. Sorry to be of little help.

Hey, that’s okay. I’ve never tried a KT Red either. I was thinking of getting a bottle of the 2010 Churinga Shiraz and the Cabernet together with a bunch od Rieslings. The Churinga is usually my favourite, though the Peglidis may be the more long-term wine in most years.

This is as close to as good as it gets with young Clare Valley Riesling. I didn’t think of guava, but can see it now. Similar score from me. Lovely right now. So pure! Like the smell of a springtime rain shower. But with potential too. The Peglidis is only a few steps behind, but may even be the more cellar worthy. Was less fussed on the Melva (lacks a little definition) and the Pazza (though I know you liked it). I’ll have another look at those two again tonight I’d say. I’m a little more missionary than you Jeremy it would seem :).
