2012 SC Pannell Adelaide Hills Syrah

image

When I last had a chat to Steve Pannell in August he stressed the importance he placed on value, feeling that it was a concept that had been, to an extent, lost. You needn’t look any further than this Syrah to find it again. 25% whole bunches and a tiny amount of Viognier are so well integrated you have to go looking for them.

Black cherry, stony minerality, pepper, violets, cooking chocolate and plums. So beautifully perfumed. Hints of pan juices and earth. The palate delivers on the promise. It’s between velour and silk in texture with an elasticity that doesn’t detract from its shape. The tannins are as supple and soft as you could hope for. 95

  1. Steve B says:

I thought the 2010 was smashing – this sounds like a repeat!

  2. That sums it up Steve. I thought that it was even slightly better than the 2010 so I gave it an extra point. If anyone thinks I should have stuck with 94 I’m sure they’ll forgive me on account of the price :)

  3. Steve B says:

Estimated drinking window? I must confess I guzzled my six-pack of 2010s over a month or so…..so delicious!

  4. Difficult question as I think they drink well straight away. I can’t imagine them falling over after five years but personally I’d just get stuck in over the next two years.
