Not my favourite of Montalto’s single vineyard Pinot trio but the reasons for that may of course draw others to it. Such is the nature of wine. The vineyard lies to the north of the other two sites. There are useful maps on the back label of each wine, which I applaud. The fruit seems to have an extra level of concentration.
On entry it’s all sweet strawberry jam before quickly phasing into black brambly notes and hints of sour cherry and tamarillo. Leaf and earth are more apparent as it moves through its very compact line into savoury territory. Fairly assertive sappy, smudgy tannin. It doesn’t flow quite as I’d like, giving an impression of bluntness. Now all of this sounds like I’m being very critical…and as the price tag sits at $65 I guess I am. Nevertheless it’s still a good wine. 91
