2011 Cirillo Single Vineyard Shiraz

cirillo shirazI’m not sure why Marco Cirillo doesn’t garner the same amount of attention as other members of the Barossa vanguard – and vanguard is probably the wrong word anyway seeing as I’m referring to producers who are looking more to the past for inspiration. This non-oak smashed Shiraz is a testament to the importance of what Marco and others of his ilk are bringing to a region that’s being rejuvenated by growers and winemakers who are treating their fruit with more respect and sensitivity. A bloody good wine from a tough vintage, it even pips the 2011 Cirillo Vincent Grenache in the quality and value stakes.

Verve, vivacity, pep or whatever you want to call it – it comes gushing forth here. The sparkle of fresh, vibrant fruit unhindered by woody artifice. Red cherry/berry flavours flash brightly above blackberry and mulberry bass notes. Violets strewn in turned earth, pepper and nuts. Come-hither texture. A meaty, wild edge underpins the medium-bodied elegance on display. Spicy, juicy and sexy with character, form and approachability. So much fun to slam down. 92

  1. We LOVED this too. Searing purity for a 2011 Barossa Shiraz, dialled back but not requiring understanding or highbrow appreciation to overcome the wet season. Still mouth filling, but with each woven character civilly invited and layered throughout, rather than attacking all at once, like many warm vintage lesser wines can do.

Absolutely stunning value. A gorgeous new world alternative to Cornas.

  2. Almost made the ‘Old World’ comparison but pulled out for fear of reprisal :) It is a belter though, glad to hear you saw it in a similar light Tony. And as you point out eloquently, it’s not one of those 2011s that you have to get all cerebral about to enjoy.
