2011 Angullong Chardonnay

Angullong chardI misread this wine yesterday and gave it a retaste this morning after reading another review from one whose palate I respect – even if we don’t always agree. I’m of the opinion that wine is a dialogue and that listening doesn’t compromise independence.

Sunny flavours. Lemon and grapefruit sit beneath melon and stonefruit. A sprinkle of herbs and some sourdough. But it has savoury funk and good length. The barest hint of toast and spice. Just lacks a little detail. Got 5 stars from WineState magazine. I won’t go that far but it is very good value for money. 90 Good

In the interest of honest journalism can we the original view again?

To be clear I’m not having a go, just would like to see day 1 opinion.
Really appreciate that your view can change.

  3. Pete – no worries. It’s a reasonable request. On day one, all I saw was a virtually unwooded Chardonnay with quite a bit of fruit sweetness, some clunky pineapple and little character – a simple quaffer. I don’t have the exact note anymore but I think you can get the gist. Some savoury funk and a toning down of the overt tropical fruit on the second tasting led to a rating of Average being bumped up to Good. There was just a lot more personality and interest on show.
