This is the first time anyone has sent me a sample of Champagne. I must have made it in the wine writing world. Hang on, I’m not supposed to admit any of this. Keep it together, act professional and for god’s sake don’t admit that you polished off the entire bottle with your neighbours. Wine’s for tasting, not drinking. No, forget all I’ve just said. I tasted this in a blind bracket of many, many fine Champagnes, all expensive and none of which excited me (I obviously prefer beer).
Well, you know, it’s jolly good gear. Elegance from the 40% Chardonnay, body and soul from the 60% Pinot Noir and Meunier. Honey, nuts, acacia florals, white peach and red fruits. Delectable brioche notes and chalky minerality. Fresh citrus and plenty of vigour yet it feels genteel and sophisticated on the palate. Not too broad, not too fine. As Goldilocks’ famously uttered, “Just right”. Yes, I could get use to this. 93 Very Good – Excellent
