Tom Carson has a way with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, there’s no doubt about it. His 2010 Yabby Lake Single Vineyard Chardonnay flew off the shelves. I’ve tasted this new release on about three occasions now and polishing off a bottle over the course of a day spent by myself was pretty much the high-point of my weekend. Lucky it’s a really good wine.
It smells of bready lees, grapefruit, struck match, white flowers and stonefruit flesh. Some smoked almond oak and a whisper of honeycomb too. The real keys here though are minerality, precision, endurance and nuance. A touch funky with some phenolic grip squeezing every last bit out of a spicy finish, leaving traces of brine to linger. The acidity has begun to bed down nicely since I first had a glass last year and it’s already drinking well. 94 Excellent
