2011 Trellis Yarra Valley Chardonnay

Geez, we’re making some shit-hot Chardonnay in this country at the moment. Well, truth be told, I’ve never personally made one in my entire life but I drink a lot of them…so I feel like I’m part of the whole evolution. Trellis Wines were established in 2007 with Luke Houlihan (ex Yarra Ridge and Long Gully Estate) handling the winemaking duties and Greg Dunnett taking care of the viticulture.

Struck match, Bosc pear, solids funk and nectarine on a nutty bouquet. A shard of piercing grapefruit tinged acidity runs through an otherwise yielding mouthfeel. Partial malolactic fermentation, spiced nougat oak and lees stirring have given this plenty of textural nous. There are suggestions of almonds and oatmeal too. It’s not an austere wine but there is impressive structure and drive through-out. Plenty of endurance too. Very Good – Excellent
