2010 Fox Creek Old Vine Shiraz

Opened a bunch of Shirazes from 2009 and 2010 last night. None of them did a lot for me personally, but I have them all in front of me again this morning and it could be I was a tad harsh.

Sourced from a vineyard planted in 1910. For some worthwhile thoughts on what ‘Old Vines’ contribute to a wine take a trip over to Philip White’s blog “Drinkster“. And now for the review. Blood plum, raspberry coulis and coconut cream oak on first sniff – plenty of it too. Regional tar, choc licorice bullets and some saline minerality through the back palate. Smooth…sort of…the acidity is a touch forced but it mostly settles into the wine’s fleshy body with time. Some depth for sure.

There’s probably too much going on to call it simple, but it is a predictable and largely uninspiring expression of site and variety. The price is steep and I’d really like to see more character. Good
