2010 Mule Shiraz

The ‘Mule’ label is the new kid on the block in the Giant Steps/Innocent Bystander stable of wines. Grapes are sourced from the Gateway Vineyard in McLaren Vale; a vineyard that is currently in conversion to full biodynamic status…if that sort of thing floats your boat. The wines are all classy. Not bad considering this is the first set of releases. If future vintages are kind we’re in for a treat.

I tasted this amongst a bracket of McLaren Vale reds and it stood out for its quality and interest. Fruit was hand harvested and transferred to French oak barriques (30% new) where it gathered its thoughts for sixteen months. 30% whole bunches were included in the ferment.

Black and red fruits are flecked with blueberry pie. There’s a surprisingly appetising whiff of aged meat which, kind of sadly, dwindles with time. Pepper and salted dutch licorice put in strong performances. The malted chocolate oak is well pitched – it doesn’t smother the fruit but it adds a tasty dimension. Tannin sits somewhere between stemmy and grainy. There’s some Viognier in here as well but you’d be hard pressed to notice it. It’s like using anchovies in tomato gravy – it contributes an important dimension but not many will pick it as a distinct ingredient. A strong debut for sure. Very Good

  2. I’m sorry but I can’t be of much help there. North Sydney Wine Cellars may have it but your best bet is probably to order online at the winery website.
