2009 Lazy Ballerina Shiraz Viognier

Lazy Ballerina’s Shiraz Viognier is a wine that had a profound effect on me when I first drank a bottle. It was a wine that felt like it had real personality. A wine to sit with and share both thoughts and silence. These days I’m concentrating on rather different styles but I still have a soft spot for this – and it deserves its place in my heart.

The influence of the Viognier seems clear, even though very little is used in the co-ferment. Apricot, exotic stone fruits and extra textural slipperiness. Over that sits black fruits, plums, tar and fig jam. A cornucopia of spice as well. It’s dense and layered yet the warming alcohol thins things out, resulting in a flowing, velvety mouthfeel. Lush and a little old-fashioned but there are times when this is just what I’m looking for. With winter just around the corner it may be just the ticket. Good
