2010 Scarborough Blue Label Chardonnay

After a week of computer issues I had hoped to post a whole heap of tasting notes today…but other work has muscled in. Best to chip away then. I should catch up by early April I hope. Thanks to readers and producers for their patience.

The Scarborough Blue Label is, in a very real sense, the most modern of the winery’s three Chardonnays. The Yellow and White labels are quite powerful and more than well enough made to withstand the stylistic homogenisation that no doubt tempts many winemakers to alter their approach these days. This Blue Label feels more contemporary – it’s restrained, tangy and crisp. All in a good way too.

There’s fruit here. It’s definitely not flavourless. The more or less ubiquitous white peach over lime and nectarine. Beautiful suggestion of white florals too. Oak is pared back but adds spice, a hint of toast and maybe even some pine. Refreshing and effortlessly drinkable. One might almost be tempted to call it simple but I think pure is the more apt term. A spritely line of acid carries the wine briskly along its path towards a true finish. You know, this is very well made and at $20 I can’t see anyone having any issues with it. It’s not a showstopper but I don’t think it sets out to be. Honest and lovingly crafted. It has a lot of things going for it. Oh, and yes, it will age well over the medium term. Good – Very Good
